BMF’s guide to the boiler scrappage scheme

When does the scheme start?
The scheme is now in place, and vouchers will be issued from 18th January 2010.
Am I eligible?
There are various criteria to qualify:
  • You must have a G-rated boiler. A qualified professional will easily be able to tell you if your boiler falls into that category but as a general rule, if you have a permanent pilot light, a gas boiler older than 15 years or an oil-fired boiler more than 25 years old, it’s likely to be G-rated.
  • If you’re under 60 the boiler does need to be in working order (but not if you’re over 60). The boiler needs to be the main source of heat within the home.
  • You must also live in England and either own or privately rent the property. Private landlords can apply for multiple properties.
  • A G-rated boiler must be swapped for an A-rated boiler.
  • If you are already claiming money from the Warm Front scheme, you may not be eligible for the scrappage scheme.
Remember only 125,000 vouchers are currently available nationally, on a first-come-first-served basis.
What do I do if I want to apply for the £400?
You should get several quotes from different installers to ensure you’re getting a good deal. Some large suppliers may have additional discounts to the boiler scrappage scheme – but they can often be substantially more expensive than independent installers to begin with. Make sure the installers you talk to have the necessary qualifications and registrations to fit the boiler you require (for example, GasSafe).
Once you have decided which boiler to go for, and who you wish to install it, you will need to register your details with the Energy Saving Trust by calling 0800 512 012 or emailing boilerscrappage@est.org.uk. They will need to know:
  • your name
  • your address
  • the brand and model of the boiler being scrapped
  • the company, address and contact details of the installer
  • the type of replacement boiler to be installed
  • that you have received a quote from a qualified engineer to carry out the work
How do I redeem my voucher?
You should receive your voucher around 10 days after applying and it will need to be used within 12 weeks. It is vital you wait to receive your voucher before work is started, or you will not be able to claim the money back.
You will need to pay upfront for the installation and then send the voucher and invoice back to the Energy Savings Trust to receive the £400. This should be sent to you within 25 days.
